“Canyoning with Montana Explora”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

Montana Explora is a father-son (Ricky Lopez is the dad) team of two with whom we went on a crazy canyon adventure. It is a 4-5 hour activity, to which you can add a couple of hours travel time getting there and back from San Juan on your rental car. Add an hour more, if you get lost, like us (the GPS was not very reliable).

These guys were awesome, they truly love nature, do environmentally responsible travel and know a whole lot about the local plants and trees. Every few minutes they’d stop and show us local flora. But this is more than just a nature field trip. We trekked down 500 ft into the canyon, then walked along a stream then a ledge to a narrow point where we had nowhere else to go. The guys then secured a rope to a tree and asked us to rappel down about 200 ft into an underground river. Yes, an underground river! We got down till the end of the rope after which we jumped into the river (i don’t know how to swim, had a life jacket), flapped around till we got to one end of the pond where there was this waterfall happening. To be sure, the guys had a little ladder propped up against a rock, and then we had to climb the ladder, and then climb a whole bunch of rocks against the flow of water (yes, we were climbing up a waterfall, it felt risky as hell) to the top. Its the craziest thing I’ve ever done. If you don’t mind an adventure fraught with some risk and a lot of excitement, this is THE thing to do in Puerto Rico.

“Its a hike, but worth it.”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

If you are not on a tour, its a long walk to get there. But the view along the way is just great. You do have to remember you have that same walk back out, so take it slow. Its like a mini grand canyon to try to describe it. If your in the area, and your physically in shape, go for it.

“The whole extra miles.”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

This extreme adventure was crossing from one town to another, we did river trekking, crossing through the forest doing hiking and had the experience to be on top of the waterfall cascade was amazing with that beautiful scenery. Everybody was amazed. We got to the bottom of the waterfall and had a little swim and got under the water cascade. Have a water massage on your back was so relaxing. We continued and wanted to see more; the creations of those big rocks, at two hundred feet below in the canyon. We did rappelling which was awesome. Advice you need a good pair of sneaker, gloves and plenty of water and have munchies cause you will get hungry! Our tour guides Ricky Lopez and Gama are great!! you will feel comfortable with them when doing the adventure. We did all that until we got to the other side of the town through the woods and river trekking. This was my first time and will go again and enjoy every moment of it.

“Hidden gem in Barranquitas…”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

We did the canyon trek on July 5, 2013. The organizer, Go Hiking PR, stated that we needed to be at the Burger King in Barranquitas at 7:30 am. There we met with other Trekkers and the organizer, Samuel. After going through the preliminaries such as payment and signing waivers, we followed the main car in caravan to the starting point. We signed up for the mid-level trek. We got our gear such as a helmet and life preserver and started ziplining about 150 feet to the other side of the river. We continued walking up and down the hills as we approached various water holes where you could jump into them. You can see the canyon from the top and then walk down and jump into the water there. The last 30 minutes were tough as we needed to walk up hill to end the trek by the school bus that would take us back to our cars. It was a great trek and physically exhausting if you aren’t in good shape. The trek was well organized and the guides were very helpful. Please keep in mind that you will use ladders to go down in some areas and ropes and tree branches to go up and down in others. You will get wet and possibly slip and get bruised a few times but it is worth it. It is not considered a tourist attraction but mostly an adventure/trekking attraction. Happy trekking…

“Amaizing Challenging Experience”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

I have been to other adventures but none like this one with Ricky. I have been camping and climbing and whent with a Marine and even he had a great time. He takes you to El Yunque, but a part you have never gone before. He makes small groups adventures and lents all the equipment. He is crazy adventurous. We passed by another group and they did half the things we did. He takesyou to amazing waterfalls, rappelling, hiking, and a great experience through the whole jurney. If you come to Puerto Rico or live here, make a group and give Ricky a call! make sure to wear shoes with good grip, bring snacks and water, and a positive attitude to have an amazing day. It sure is a challenging jurney but Ricky helps you all the way so anybody can take the tour.

“A taste of the unseen Jungle”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

An amazing adventure filled with climbing down water falls, rappelling down, jumping off cliffs. Ricky and his son took us through an 8 hour hike through the El Yunque rain forest, that did not disappoint.

He loans you shoes, knee pads, helmets, and other various adventure excursion tools. You climb out from his back yard which is a wide expanse of descending El Yunque, and within 45 minutes to an hour you are doused in river water and harnessed to a rope slowly lowering yourself down a rushing waterfall.

Truly a memorable experience. But beware this is no walk in the park, be prepared to carry yourself, although Ricky does go at a capable pace.

Enjoy the full submersion into the rain forest and take refuge from the 9-5 lives we live.

“Montana Explora – Rio Cubui – An unforgettable experience!”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

This year my 16 yrs old son, my brother, my sister, and I trusted Ricky Lopez of Montana Explora to guide and lead us through an amazing and unique adventure in El Yunque, Rio Cubui. Before we started our tour, Ricky and his asistant, Luimi, helped us to get ready. Ricky provided each one of us with a helmet, knees and elbows protectors, and some special hiking/water shoes. Once geared up, we took our backpacks full of food and water and off we went into the wilderness of El Yunque, Puerto Rico.

Before this excursion, I was terrified of rappelling. However Ricky’s knowledge and experience took my fears away. I agree with other reviewers who have done tours with him. These tours are not for the faint of heart. You will challenge yourself to greatness and complete the tour with a feeling of accomplishment. My fear of rappelling is a thing of the past!!!

This year I did five excursions with Montana Explora and I enjoyed them all!

If you are looking for something different and unique, then, Montana Explora might be the right company for you. Ricky goes at your own pace. He will accommodate your physical needs. His knowledge, experience, and personality will create unforgettable memories for you.

Highly recommended.

“First Rate Adventure in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque Rain Forest!”tripadvisor-circles-excelente

We went yesterday with Ricky Lopez and his assistant Luis to El Yunque for another memorable adventure with Montaña Explora.
This is the second time that my children, my nieces and I go with Ricky to the end of paradise and back. My sister came this time since she missed last year’s excursion but had heard from her daughters about their great adventure and my raving reviews. The kids’ ages range from 11 to 14 years.

Ricky is a very knowledgeable guide, with a great spirit and a lot of patience. He took us to an area of El Yunque Forest that one rarely sees unless you are with someone who knows his way around the unbeaten paths. We hiked down through great flora, hidden plantain trees and huge ferns of great variety to reach the river.

Ricky’s excursions are not for the faint of heart. We saw, jumped and rappelled from great boulders, swan through waterfalls and saw Taino petroglyphs.

Like last year’s excursion to the El Cañon de San Cristóbal, this year’s trip to El Yunque was a unique experience and Montaña Explora made it so. Ricky takes his time with his clients and his tours last as long as the clients’ stamina. It was a day to remember and we all look forward to the next adventure with Montaña Explora.
